A tribute to The Best Batch Yet

Last week Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart died. His music was already history as he made his last album in 1982 (Ice cream for crow). Most pop music tries to give you what you want. Which makes it generally boring. And i have no idea why music should be a bore to us. Whatever you think of Beefheart's music, it is never boring, instead it challenges you. It makes the melancholy humorous and vice versa and it makes the surreal realistic and vice versa.

After his last album Don Van Vliet stuck to drawing and painting. Although he was a prolific and greatly talented painter i still think his Captain Beefheart albums were his best creations, unframed and unframable as they are. And they still inspire me as i hope they will inspire you. As a tribute herewith the 1997 BBC documentary by (the also legendary) John Peel about Beefheart/Van Vliet.

Vorige week overleed Don Van Vliet alias Captain Beefheart. Zijn muziek was al historie want hij maakte zijn laatste album in 1982 (Ice cream for crow). De meeste popmuziek wil je geven wat je wil. Dat maakt haar in het algemeen vervelend. En ik heb geen idee waarom muziek ons zou moeten vervelen. Wat je ook vindt van Beefheart's muziek, ze is nooit vervelend, maar daagt je uit. Ze maakt het melancholieke humoritisch  en vice versa en ze maakt het surreële realistisch en vice versa.

Na zijn laatste album beperkte Don Van Vliet zich tot tekenen en schilderen. Hoewel hij een vruchtbaar en zeer getalenteerd schilder was, vind ik zijn Captain Beefheart albums zijn beste werken, oningelijst en oninlijstbaar als ze zijn. En ze inspireren mij nog steeds zoals ik hoop dat ze ook U zullen inspireren. Als een hulde hierbij de BBC documentaire uit 1997 van (de ook legendarische) John Peel over Beefheart/Van Vliet.
